Direct Sunlight Is the Enemy of Figures: Storage and Display Techniques in the Battle Against Discoloration

Placing your figures in a glass cabinet doesn't guarantee peace of mind. PVC in a display case near a window will yellow within two years, and clear parts will turn cloudy. UV protection, dust management, temperature and humidity control—understanding these three principles that protect your collection from invisible threats is essential for long-lasting collecting joy.

Why figures discolor even inside glass cabinets

Let me get straight to the point: glass does not completely block ultraviolet rays. Three locations are unsuitable for figure storage—within two meters of a window, directly under fluorescent lights, and where air conditioning blows directly. A friend who purchased a Good Smile Company Hatsune Miku scale figure in 2009 and displayed it in a living room cabinet found that by summer 2011, the clear parts at the tips of her twintails had turned yellow. The difference was clear when compared to my own specimen of the same product, stored in a dark room.

PVC material is vulnerable to heat and ultraviolet light. The vast majority of mass-produced scale figures—whether from Alter, Max Factory, or Kotobukiya—use a mixed PVC and ABS structure. White, transparent, and pastel-toned painted surfaces are particularly susceptible; even six months of direct sunlight exposure will produce visible yellowing. Decorated masters spend only a few days under exhibition lighting, so discoloration is less of a concern, but the mass-produced items that reach our hands are objects we must live with for a decade.

Where should display cabinets be placed?

Position them at least three meters from windows, choosing a wall where direct sunlight absolutely cannot reach. For open-style glass cabinets like the IKEA DETOLF, applying UV-blocking film to the inside of the glass panels is one option. Even after film application, I recommend secondary protection with curtains or blinds. Since 2012, I've kept blackout curtains half-open at all times, closing them completely between 2 and 4 PM during summer afternoons.

LED lighting is superior to fluorescent. Fluorescent lights emit trace amounts of ultraviolet radiation and generate more heat. If you're installing LED strips at the top of your display case, daylight color (5000K or higher) will show paint more accurately than warm white (below 3000K). However, do not leave them on 24 hours a day. Light itself causes cumulative damage. I only turn them on during viewing time and always switch them off before leaving home. Figure longevity matters more than electricity consumption.

Aim for temperatures between 20-25°C and humidity between 40-60%. Direct exposure to air conditioning can cause PVC to harden or painted surfaces to crack. Replace desiccants every three months, and during the summer rainy season, open the cabinet doors once daily for ten minutes to ventilate. When moisture accumulates in sealed spaces, mold can develop on the undersides of bases or inside joints.

How should dust be removed?

A brush and a blower—these two tools are sufficient. I use a size 8 flat brush from an art supply store and a camera blower. First, blow away large dust particles with the blower, then sweep hair gaps and clothing creases with the brush. Never use wet wipes or alcohol swabs. They will strip paint or remove gloss.

Products with many interchangeable parts, like Nendoroids or Figmas, can be disassembled for cleaning. Drop one drop of mild detergent into lukewarm water, immerse for 30 seconds, rinse under running water, and air-dry in shade. However, do not immerse ABS joints and PVC face parts together. Different expansion rates between materials may result in assembly issues. Scale figures have adhesive structures that make disassembly impossible, so they must be maintained with brushing alone.

Do not discard boxes; keep them. Nothing protects figures better than original packaging during moves or reorganization. Store them horizontally in ventilated indoor spaces like under beds or atop wardrobes, rather than in damp storage rooms. Standing boxes vertically will cause the internal blister packaging to collapse under its own weight.

How do you read used figure condition grades?

The Japanese secondhand market uses S, A, B, and C grades to indicate condition. S is unopened new, A is opened but only displayed, B shows signs of use but no damage, and C has missing parts or paint wear. Many sellers in Korean direct purchases or auction transactions follow this standard, so check grade descriptions carefully.

Even for A-grade items, request photographs. Standards vary by seller. Details like box corner dents, scratches on base backs, or bent hair tips often go unreflected in grades. In 2015, I bought an A-grade Alter Saber from Mandarake Nakano and only later discovered paint bleeding on the sword tip. Since then, I don't buy used items without physical inspection.

Waiting for rereleases is more comfortable. Rather than paying premiums for first-edition used items, watch for rerelease reservations from Good Smile Company or Max Factory. Rereleases often have improved paint compared to first editions. The 2022 rerelease of Racing Miku 2012 ver. had noticeably better transparency in the helmet clear parts than the original.

FAQ

How many years can figures be stored?

Under proper conditions, even PVC figures last over 20 years. My Kaiyodo Revoltech Evangelion Unit-01, purchased in 2005, remains free of joint hardening or discoloration as of 2025. However, direct sunlight, high heat and humidity, and prolonged sealed storage will cut lifespan in half. More important than storage is regular inspection. Every six months, take them out, move the joints, remove dust, and check for moisture.

Why do clear parts become sticky?

Plasticizer leaching, commonly called the "beta phenomenon." Plasticizers added to soften PVC gradually seep to the surface over time. High-temperature environments or sealed storage accelerate the process. Once stickiness begins, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with mild detergent, but preventing recurrence is nearly impossible. This appears more frequently in manufacturers' early products, especially prize figures from before the mid-2000s.

Do prize and scale figures require different storage methods?

The materials are the same, but finishing quality differs. Prize figures have less precise paint boundaries and visible parting lines, making them look dirtier than scales when dust accumulates. However, storage principles remain identical. UV protection, humidity control, regular dust removal—follow these three rules and even Sega prize figures will last a decade. If anything, lower-priced items are more often discarded without boxes, so pay even closer attention to original box preservation.

Figures are truly owned not in the moment of purchase, but in the time spent keeping them nearby. Watching sculptures age alongside you for a decade inside a glass cabinet brings back the excitement of the day you placed that preorder based on a single decorated master photograph. Overcome just three enemies—sunlight, dust, and moisture—and your cabinet will still shine fifteen years from now. May good fortune grace your cabinets today as well.
