How to Spot Fake Figures: 7 Checks Before You Buy

The more popular a figure is, the more bootlegs circulate — Nendoroids and hit scale figures even have dedicated counterfeit factories. Here is what to check before ordering, and how to verify the item once it arrives.

1. The most reliable check is the supply chain, not the item

Ninety percent of authenticity is settled by the route, not the object. Items sourced through Japanese makers' official distribution (Good Smile Company, Alter, Kotobukiya and so on) leave no room for bootlegs to slip in. Items from unclear marketplace listings or social-media resellers are risky no matter how convincing the photos look.

Yosimarket sources directly from official Japanese distribution channels and inspects items before shipping. The full flow is described in how it works.

2. A strangely low price is the first red flag

Authentic figures have a published maker's retail price. A 20,000-yen-class scale figure listed 'new' for the price of a lunch is almost always a bootleg — and a discontinued, rare item priced below its original retail deserves the same suspicion.

You can verify retail prices on the maker's official product page. It is safest to assume a half-price 'new' figure does not exist.

3. On the box: print quality and the authenticity seal

4. On the figure: paint edges and sculpt detail

Paint gives bootlegs away most often: slightly smeared eye decals, jagged color borders, or skin tones that look too dark or too red. Rough molding on thin parts like hair tips and prominent parting lines are also signs.

When comparing against 'official' photos, use the maker's product page as the reference. Bootleg listings usually steal official photos, so the most common pattern is: the photos are genuine, the item that arrives is not.

5. By type: Nendoroid, scale, prize

If the scale-versus-prize distinction itself is new to you, start with scale vs prize figures.

Scale figuresHigh (popular titles)Box printing, paint borders, base engraving, weight
Prize figuresMediumLow retail price means less incentive, but hits get faked; check the maker tag

6. For pre-owned figures, check authenticity along with condition grade

Items that passed through Japanese pre-owned shops are appraised at buy-in, which filters most bootlegs out. For items with private-trade history, the original route is unknowable — so keep the habit of checking box and seal condition too.

How to read pre-owned condition labels is covered in the pre-owned figure grade guide.

7. If you received a fake: photograph everything and contact the seller

Wherever you bought it, a bootleg is an item that differs from its description, which makes it refundable without time limits in most jurisdictions. Photograph the box front, the seal area and any suspicious spots before contacting the seller.

If anything about a Yosimarket item looks doubtful, contact us with photos. Defects, wrong items and items differing from the description are handled regardless of the 24-hour cancellation window.

FAQ

Is a figure without a seal automatically fake?

No. Some genuine items ship without seals depending on maker and production year — especially older releases and prize figures. Treat the seal as one signal among several, together with the supply route, price and paint quality.

Can I trust 'official stores' on marketplaces?

A store name containing 'official' often has no relation to the maker. The accurate check is whether the seller appears in the maker's list of authorized retailers.

Is there an authentication service?

Makers do not offer official appraisal. Collector communities such as MyFigureCollection often help compare box and figure photos against verified items.

Do prize figures get bootlegged too?

Yes. It is less common because retail prices are low, but popular series have confirmed fakes. Check the maker tag (Banpresto, SEGA, etc.) and print quality.

Are Yosimarket items authentic?

Yes — sourced directly from official Japanese distribution and inspected before shipping. If an item differs from its description, it is exchanged or refunded regardless of time limits.
