If you've decided to attend Wonder Festival, the first thing to do is not buy the official catalog. Start by entering hashtags like "#wf2024w" into the Twitter search bar. Dealers usually post their booth numbers and items for sale on Twitter starting about two weeks before the event. With photos.

Makuhari Messe is divided into several halls, and the dealer zone is usually concentrated in Halls 1 and 3. Since there are multiple entrances, check in advance which entrance is closest to your target booth. At Winter 2023 Wonder Festival, I overlooked this and ended up entering through the opposite entrance, wasting an extra 5 minutes to reach my target booth. During those 5 minutes, the priority 1 kit sold out.
Some people run the moment the doors open. The organizers announce not to run, but realistically, walking quickly gives you an advantage. If you fall while running, that's the end. I move to the booth at a brisk walk, then once I arrive, I catch my breath and scan the display.
30 seconds. That's about the longest you can deliberate in front of a booth. People are waiting behind you, and while you hesitate, the person next to you might pick up the last piece of inventory. This is precisely why prior research is important—to survive those 30 seconds.

Dealer booths have nameplates. The circle name or the sculptor's own nickname is written there. Going in knowing these names versus not knowing them is a completely different experience.
For example, if you've been following the Twitter account '@shirokuma_model', finding the "Shirokuma booth" on-site isn't difficult. But in front of an unfamiliar circle name, you have to judge based solely on the displayed kits. Gauging sculpting quality within 30 seconds is difficult even for veterans.
Every sculptor has their specialty. Some excel at facial sculpting, others are superb at rendering clothing folds. There are mecha-specialized sculptors and those who focus on fantasy armor. As you watch their work-in-progress photos on Twitter, you naturally learn their style. However, mail order usually happens 1-2 months after the event, and quantities are limited. If 50 were sold at Wonder Festival, mail order stock is about 10-20 pieces. The moment the Twitter announcement goes up, a reservation war begins with everyone hammering F5. In the end, the surest method is to get it in your hands directly at the Wonder Festival venue.
Consignment is the same. If you go to the consignment corner of a major Japanese hobby shop, you can see Wonder Festival entries, but popular items sell on the morning of the day they arrive. At one store in Nakano Broadway, I found a kit I wanted, but it already had a 'RESERVED' tag attached. Someone had reserved it by phone.

Wonder Festival isn't the only place to encounter garage kits. Korea also has a figure sculpting hobby culture, and small gallery events are held. The scale can't compare to Wonder Festival, but considering travel time and costs, they're sufficiently attractive options.
At garage kit exhibitions held intermittently around Seoul's Euljiro or Hongdae areas, you can see domestic sculptors' works. While they're often exhibition-focused rather than sales, being able to talk directly with artists and hear their sculpting philosophy is an experience not easily had even at Wonder Festival. A sculptor I met at a gallery in 2023 spent 20 minutes explaining the part division method used in their kit.
The advantage of domestic events is no language barrier. At Wonder Festival dealer booths, exchanges often end with just confirming price and stock in English or simple Japanese. But at domestic exhibitions, you can comfortably ask questions like "How did you sculpt this part?" or "Is there a reason you divided the parts this way?"
The difference in scale is clear. Wonder Festival sees tens of thousands of visitors in a day, while domestic garage kit galleries get a few hundred over a weekend. You can buy an admission ticket on-site the day of without advance registration, but if online advance ticket purchase is available, I recommend it.
